PROTECTING YOUR HEARING

Why do I need hearing protection earmuffs for my kids?

When your child’s hearing is not protected at a young age, they can be at risk of Noise-Induced Hearing Loss. Noise exposure for kids occurs in recreational settings, and at home. Recreational activities that cause can put your child at risk of hearing loss include those whose sound measures over 85 decibels (dB) such as; fireworks, live music & sport, shooting ranges, drag races, air shows and in-flight travel and other noisy hobbies. Harmful noises at home can come from music, lawnmowers, leaf blowers, and other power tools.

What is Noise-Induced Hearing Loss?

Noise-Induced Hearing Loss or ‘NIHL’ is caused by exposure to loud noises that damage the tiny hairs inside the ear called the ‘cochlea’. Damage to these cochlea is permanent and irreversible and can lead to hearing impairment. NIHL can be caused by a one-time exposure to an intense “impulse” sound, such as an explosion, or by continuous exposure to sounds at, or above, 85 decibels over an extended period of time. Sources of noise that can cause NIHL include motorcycles, fire works, and small firearms, all emitting sounds from 120 to 150 decibels (dB).  The louder the sound, the shorter the time period before Noise Induced Hearing Loss can occur. Sounds of less than 75 decibels, even after long exposure, are unlikely to cause hearing loss.

RECOMMENDED USE, AGE & SIZING

How do I know what size Ems for Kids earmuffs my child needs?

The age of your child will determine the size of Ems for Kids earmuffs most suitable for your needs.  Ems for Kids earmuffs come in 2 different sizes:

  • BABY earmuffs are recommended for ages 0-18 months and are safe for newborns.
  • KIDS earmuffs are recommended for ages 6 months to mid-teens or until your child grows out of them.

Both styles of Ems for Kids earmuffs are completely adjustable and designed to grow with your child within the recommended age ranges.

Are Ems for Kids earmuffs safe for my newborn?

Absolutely! The Ems for Kids BABY earmuffs were designed specifically for babies and are perfectly safe for newborns with their unique headband design. They are recommended for ages 0-18 months of age (or until baby grows out of them).

Our KIDS earmuffs are recommended for use from 6 months of age to allow time for bub’s soft head & skull to develop first. Please note, this is a recommendation only. Some of our Ems for Kids customers have used the KIDS earmuffs on children less than 6 months old and reported no problems whatsoever.

Is it ok for my child to sleep with Ems for Kids earmuffs on?

We recommend always supervising your child when using Ems for Kids products. While the noise reducing properties of our products can help some babies and children fall asleep, particularly in louder environments, under NO CIRCUMSTANCES do we recommend leaving your baby or child unattended while they are wearing earmuffs.

PRODUCT DESIGN

How do Ems for Kids BABY earmuffs work?

Ems for Kids BABY earmuffs are the world’s first hearing protection earmuffs for infants, and use our patented design to ensure that there is less pressure placed on a baby’s skull. The headband design disperses pressure more evenly around the head, which results in a firm, yet, comfortable fit. The headband can be inserted/removed by lifting the clip on each earmuff cup and sliding the headband in or out. Our adjustable headband design allows you to adjust the size of the headband to fit your baby’s head. We use a soft-touch nylon spandex material to ensure there’s no discomfort on your baby’s skin.

Are Ems for Kids earmuffs the ORIGINAL BABY EARMUFF?

Yes! We believe Ems for Kids is the home of the ORIGINAL BABY EARMUFF.  In 2010, dad & founder, Daniel Gibney patent designed the world’s first earmuff  specifically for babies. At that time, there was no other earmuff on the market safe for newborns or with our unique headband design. Since then, competitors have flattered us by copying our product design, however we believe Ems for Kids remains the highest quality hearing protection earmuffs for little ears available on the market. Do Ems for Kids products meet international safety standards?

Most definitely! Ems for Kids products have been rigorously tested against, and meet the requirements for the following international safety standards:

ANSI S3.19 – The American National Standards Institute is a private, nonprofit organization that oversees the development of voluntary consensus standards for products, services, processes, systems, and personnel in the United States. S3.19 is the standard introduced by the ANSI to regulate hearing protection devices. Ems for Kids meets these requirements.

EN352-1: 2002 – This is the European Standard for hearing protection and hearing protectors, as well as protective clothing and other safety measures. Ems for Kids meets this standard and is permitted to display the ‘CE’ mark on its products.

Where are Ems for Kids earmuffs made?

Ems for Kids BABY earmuffs are made in the USA and our KIDS and AUDIO range are made in Taiwan. Ems for Kids is proudly 100% Australian owned.

Can the Ems for Kids BABY earmuff headbands be fitted to the KIDS earmuffs?

No. The BABY earmuff headbands cannot be used on our KIDS earmuffs. The faux-leather covered headband on our KIDS earmuffs is permanently attached to the KIDS earmuffs unlike the BABY earmuff headband which is detachable from the BABY earmuff cups.

Are Ems for Kids earmuffs phthalate free?

Yes, Ems for Kids products are phthalate free.

Why are Ems for Kids earmuffs made predominantly of plastic in a progressively “plastic-free” world?

Ems for Kids makes efforts to consider our impact on the environment. One of these efforts is to minimise your need for repeat purchase by creating a product strong enough to keep up with your little adventurer right into their mid-teens! We believe your child will only need 1 pair of BABY and 1 pair of KIDS earmuffs and while our products are not plastic-free they are most definitely reusable, durable and industrial strength.

Once bub has grown out of their BABY earmuffs, pass them on to another noisy mum or dad that can benefit from them or consider sharing a pair if you think you may only use them infrequently.  A quick wash of the headband and wipe of the earmuff cups with an anti-bacterial wipe and you are ready to share the Ems love!

Being 100% plastic also means our BABY earmuffs are MRI-safe for those bubs needing some calm in some of life’s toughest moments too.

Are Ems for Kids earmuffs MRI-safe?

Ems for Kids BABY earmuffs are 100% plastic which makes them perfectly safe for use in MRI machines in hospitals.  Our KIDS range at this stage is not MRI-safe due to the extendable metal arms.
